Nada in speech on Cuba
In his State of the Union speech tonight, President Bush said this:
"Abroad, our nation is committed to an historic, long-term goal — we seek the end of tyranny in our world."
And where are examples of that tyranny?
Bush answers:
"At the start of 2006, more than half the people of our world live in democratic nations. And we do not forget the other half — in places like Syria, Burma, Zimbabwe, North Korea, and Iran — because the demands of justice, and the peace of this world, require their fre edom as well."
That's right. No mention of Cuba, the tyranny closest to American borders and one of the longest-standing in the world. Just imagine the power a few words of acknowledgement from Bush of Cuba's Castroite hell or the courageous dissident movement would have had. The missed opportunity is maddening and saddening.
The battle to change hearts and minds about Cuba obviously still has a long way to go before we can expect real change in how the American public views Cuba.
What do you wish Bush had said about Cuba?
