To not risk saying something tacky and tasteless — like how a hunger strike against the war in Iraq by Cindy Sheehan and friends might be a good way to wipe out a lot of nuisances to American society — I will post Sheehan's invitation to join her in her protest without comment:
Dear Friends,
GSFP and Code Pink are sponsoring a hunger strike for peace which begins July 04, called Troops Home Fast Some of us like Dick Gregory and Diane Wilson will be fasting until the troops come home from Iraq, and some, like me, will be fasting for a specified time. My fast will begin on 7/04 and end on the last day of Camp Casey: 09/02.
We are announcing the fast from Washington, DC on 07/04 and having our last supper on 07/03 in Lafayette Park.
If you can join us in DC on the 3rd and 4th, or fast in solidarity with us on that day, or any other time, please let me know.
Also, Jodie Evans is throwing me a birthday party at Bus Boys and poets on the 3rd of July from 9pm to 11pm....our last food will be before midnight that day....please come to my party, if you can!!!
Love and peace soon,
Cindy
Others signed up for the fast include Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, Willie Nelson and Danny Glover, who here shares a brokeback moment with Harry Belafonte, who I'm sure will be joining the fast at any moment, as soon as Hugo lets him out of the house.
OK, I can't resist.
I have one small comment. It's a target-rich environment.
Actually, it's more of a question.
In a press release, professional faster Diane Wilson said her fast against the war will be "open-ended," implying, I guess, that she is willing to take her protest to a natural end.
If that is the noble way to go, then why on its Web site does Troops Home Fast include tips for healthy fasting?
This is not a protest.
It is only a publicity stunt, which I'm sure will be successful.
Meanwhile, someone willing to die for a far more just cause suffers in silence.
Take a closer look and you will learn that Cindy Sheehan and friends are no Guillermo Fariñas.
