Republican presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., supports the American embargo on Cuba, and said as much during an event in December in Miami.
"Trading with Castro is not the way to bring about democratic change in Cuba," Brownback said.
And his campaign Web site notes that Brownback sees supporting the struggle for freedom in Cuba as part of his larger world-view, and of his religious faith.
Senator Brownback, a Catholic, believes that we must build a culture of life where the inherent dignity of every human person is respected. His vision of human dignity is a holistic vision, reflected in his unwavering support for the unborn child, his work for the poor in Africa who are at constant risk of violence or famine, and his advocacy for political dissidents in repressive nations such as North Korea or Cuba.
In 2003, Brownback was one of several Republican senators who voted to loosen restrictions on travel to the island, according to the New York Times.
