"Re-education" official threatens imprisoned journalist

Political prisoner Juan Carlos Herrera Acosta is winning his personal war against the Cuban dictatorship — and demonstrating what it means to be a real journalist.

At least it seems, so based on how hard his jailers are working to silence him.

A story posted at Payo Libre reports that the chief "re-education" officer at the Kilo 8 prison in Santa Clara threatened to send Herrera, an independent journalist, to a punishment cell if he continues to inform international organizations of the poor health and other conditions in the prison.

Ileana Danger Hardy told journalist Yoel Espinosa Medrano that her husband would continue to speak out about the human rights violations at Kilo 8.

Herrera was arrested during the "black spring" of March-April 2003, and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
