The testimony of Francisco Chaviano

Human rights activist Franciso Chaviano was released from prison Friday, after serving more than 13 years of a 15-year prison sentence. Out of jail, he has picked up where he left off, denouncing the crimes and sins of the Castro dictatorship, especially conditions in its gulag.

“Cuban prisons are really hellish. There is constant aggression against us and against our families," Chaviano said. “One day, out of the blue, they came and took me out of my cell under some pretext and ordered me to remove all my clothes. Colonel Guzmán, the prison chief, ordered that I be beaten. They kept me 5 years without sunlight. I could not leave my cell. I spent 4 years without conjugal visits and 3 years without family visits.”
