The Castro dictatorship's strong-arm treatment of the Damas De Blanco ("Ladies In White") continued over the weekend with the arrest of the three of the group's members. Also, two other members were not allowed to leave their homes to attend an event Sunday commemorating the International Day of the Woman.
The Damas, however, had the final word, as group members were able to go forward with their traditional Sunday ritual of Mass followed by a silent march through central Havana to demand the release of their imprisoned loved ones.
"State Security, in the name of the government of Raúl Castro has given us a wonderful gift, they have detained three women," Laura Pollán Toledo, leader of the Damas, told independent journalist Carlos Serpa. "They apparently do not remember that women gave birth to them, that they are married to women, and that many of them have daughters.
"But what can we expect of a military dictatorship; we cannot expect anything else but repression, repression in the place of celebration on this day," Pollán said.
Chances are the dictatorship's attacks on the Damas will continue and increase, in advance of next week's six-year anniversary of the "black spring."
