The bizarre is never a surprise in communist Cuba. If you find yourself feeling surprised at the latest example of repression by the Castro dictatorship, just remember that that is tyrants do what they do. The only surprise, maybe, is how little shame the authorities show when they go to extremes.
Going to extremes is what the dictatorship did this past March, when Lázaro Melanio Vidal Hernández was sentenced to 1 year of forced labor.
His crime?
Selling candy to support his family. The state, the only legal domestic employer in Cuba, simply cannot provide.
His real crime?
Melanio, of Bejucal in Havana province, is a member of the Pacific Democratic Line Movement, and each week had been participating in vigils in support of political prisoners.
