The quote of the day comes from the unnamed Cuban dentist who cut through the government doublespeak, and the media misunderstanding, blaming the global recession for why Cubans, once again, are being forced to make material sacrifices through smaller rations for basic foodstuffs.
"What international crisis? In Cuba we've been in crisis for 50 years," the 28-year-old dentist said. "I'm tired of hearing justifications for the problems we always have."
The blame for those problems, once again, belongs to the dictators at the top, and their chronic mismanagement of the Cuban economy. Goodness gracious, they cannot even feed their own people, even with the United States being its largest foreign supplier of food!
The recession, just like the so-called "embargo," is just a convenient excuse, giving the dictatorship a chance to once again blame someone else.
The reporter for AFP may not see it that way, but clearly there are at least some Cubans on the street who know what's what.
