Efren Fernández Fernández
The suffering of those unjustly imprisoned in the Castro gulag is shared by their mothers and fathers, wives and husbands, and brothers and sisters. They, too, are the tyranny's victims, separated from their loved ones. The torture, I'm certain, is the same for those behind bars.
Tonight, my thoughts and prayers are especially with Efren Fernández Fernández, a member of the Christian Liberation Movement (MCL) imprisoned since the "black spring" of 2003 and whose father died Feb. 6 after several heart attacks. In the past seven years, Fernández has lost both of his parents, according to a news release from the MCL.
Fernández was allowed to attend a wake for his father. But perhaps mindful of what happened at Gloria Amaya's funeral, the authorities would only grant him a furlough as long as MCL activists did not participate, preventing them from paying "a last tribute to the father of a brother in prison."
