On the day that Cuban political prisoner Orlando Zapata Tamayo died after more than 80 days on hunger strike, we learned that his compatriot, Juan Ramón Rivera Despaine, is critically ill because of his own protest.
For three weeks, Rivera — who with Zapata founded the Alternative Republican Movement — has been on hunger strike to demand medical are he needs. But instead of giving him the "care" Cuba is so famous for, the authorities have instead let him waste away in a tiny, dirty punishment cell at the maximum security Mar Verde prison in Santiago de Cuba.
"They have placed him on an IV because he already is in critical condition," said fellow political prisoner Luis Enrique Ferrer García. "On the 26th of January, the guards stripped him of all of his possessions and left him naked in a cell block with 150 prisoners, after State Security opened another investigation for 'assault.' That is why he is protesting.
The Castro dictatorship let Zapata die. His death is their responsibility.
Hopefully, the world will not let the bastards in Havana get away with yet another murder.
