Cuban prisoner Julio Santos Hernández this month was murdered by guards at the Kilo 5 1/2 prison in Pinar del Rio.
Santos, a "common" prisoners — meaning he was not "political" — died Wednesday, March 24, three weeks after he suffered a brutal beating at the hands of his jailers, according to Cuban Democratic Directorate.
During the attack, Santos, 31. suffered fractures to his cervical vertebrae and to his trachea.
Meaning, they broke his neck.
I could not determine why Santos was in prison or why his guards felt as if they had to kill him.
Some earlier reports did describe him as a "political" prisoner. But when it comes to how guards treat their prisoners, in the Castro gulag that is often a distinction without much of a difference.
