The Inter American Press Association lays out the ugly truth about press freedom, or the lack thereof, in Cuba:
In Cuba there is no possibility at all of developing independent media. Only on the Internet, which reaches less than 2 per cent of the population, can journalists express themselves with any degree of freedom, but repression has been increasing. Over the past year, there have been more than two thousand short-term detentions, the highest figure in 30 years. Foreign correspondents also face growing difficulties in renewing their work permits.
