Rafael Ibarra Roque, one of the longest jailed political prisoners in Cuba, has been told he will be released Feb. 9.
Cuban independent journalist Dania Virgen Garcia reports that Ibarra telephoned her from the Combinado del Este prison to report the good news.
A co-founder in 1991 of the Frank País November 30 Democratic Movement, Ibarra has served 17 years and 7 months of a 20-year sentence after he was arrested and convicted in 1994 of "sabatoge." While in prison, he has been subjected to numerous physical and psychological tortures.
Of course, a promise from the Castro dictatorship isn't worth anything. Under Cuban law, Ibarra has long been eligible for parole.
So it remains to be seen whether Ibarra will actually be released.
