Five months ago today, while doing his job as an independent journalist, Calixto Ramon Martinez Arias was arrested by Cuban State Security.
His "crime"?
Reporting the truth about life in Cuba. First to break the story last summer about an outbreak of cholera, Martinez was arrested Sept. 16 near the Havana airport while investigating why a donation of medical supplies had been allowed to ruin.
In instances like this, the Castro regime will come up with trumped up "criminal" charges to justify imprisoning its opponents, but some prominent voices aren't buying it.
Amnesty International has designated Martinez as a prisoner of conscience, "solely detained for peacefully exercising his freedom of expression," and on Friday the Committee for the Protection of Journalists joined the calls for his immediate release.
Five months is enough!
