Calixto Ramon Martinez
Cuban prisoner of conscience Calixto Ramon Martinez, unjustly jailed since Sept. 16 because of his work as an independent journalist, was released Tuesday, according to his editor at the Hablemos Press news agency.
Maybe it was Martinez's demonstrated willingness to protest his imprisonment with lengthy hunger strikes. The regime on March 28 had promised to soon release Martinez if he ended his protest.
Maybe it was the solidarity of his journalistic colleagues and other activists who in recent days had launched their own hunger strikes on his behalf, generating even more attention to the case.
Maybe it was the obvious injustice of his arrest and imprisonment and the international condemnation from Amnesty International and other organizations it had inspired.
Whatever the reason or reasons, the campaign on Martinez's behalf, in Cuba and overseas, and his release, represent a defeat for the Castro dictatorship.
And a victory for the cause of Cuban freedom.
