La Ventanita has started a new series of postings in which she tells her life story as the daughter of Cuban exiles born and raised in Puerto Rico. So far, it's a bit like my story, and I'm sure of thousands of us with more than one patria. For me, I am first and foremost an American, but part of that identity is my family and cultural history as Cubans. And to really complicate matters, I'm a Texan, too! Without all three, I would not be who I am today.
LaVentanita writes:
People often ask me why I don’t feel Puerto Rican if after all I was born and raised there. But aren’t niuyorikans puertorricans too? And as far as I know, most of them have never set foot in the little island. One thing is what your birth certificate says, usually a technicality, but another is the culture you are raised in within the four walls of your home. Now that is your true nationality.
I can't wait to read the next chapter.
