Andrew Sullivan has a good suggestion, in light of all the tough words columnist and radio/TV host Tony Snow — who will be announced later today as the new White House press secretary — has had for President Bush and his administration.
As delicious as it might be to see and hear how Snow responds, I'm guessing he will do just fine.
Bush was smart to pick a journalist for the job, even one with solid right-wing credentials like Snow (speechwriter for the first President Bush, anchorman on FOX News). Bush needs someone in the job who can hold his own with the White House press corps, which often got the better of Scott McLellan.
But more than how he will work with the press, I like the Snow hiring because Bush and his chief of staff Josh Bolten reassurred Snow that he will be in on all the top-level discussion and will have his chance to contribute to the development of policy.
"I think he's excited by the idea of being on the inside," Fox News' Brit Hume told the Washington Post. "He believes he will be at the table when decisions are made. For someone of his bent, that's too good to pass up."
How all that shakes out will be determined later, but Bush would be smart to read back on what Snow has said and written about his administration.
Anyone who listens to Snow on the radio should expect that he will skillfully articulate the Bush message.
Maybe the problem with Bush message is the message, but with a smart, tough-minded and funny guy like Snow as the messenger, the American public should have a better understanding of what the president wants to do in the 2 1/2 years he has left in office.
