A sometimes pen pal and always personal hero of mine in the Cuban opposition is Dr. Darsi Ferrer. Time after time, he has shown tremendous courage, to the point of putting at risk what little liberty he enjoys, to deliver the truth about the Castro dictatorship — for example, how Cuba's membership on the United Nations Human Rights Council is a fraud — and to stand up for freedom and democracy on the island.
On Sunday, Ferrer was in the thick of it again, one of less than a dozen protesters demonstrating to commemorate International Human Rights Day.
As soon as the protesters gathered, according to the Associated Press, they were confronted by a Castroite street mob that surrounded and began pushing and shoving them, until they were forced to flee in taxis. There's no word in the AP story whether the Cuban police responded to the violence, but then in typical fashion for the dictatorship — which never hesitates to manipulate the people against each other — it probably was the police that told the mob where to go and when to be there. They probably even provided the transportation.
(In the top photo, Ferrer, in the blue shirt, is seen helping another government opponent flee the mob.)
Every time the dictatorship orders one of its street mobs to carry out an "act of repudiation" against its opponents, it further reveals its cowardice, responding to calls for freedom and human rights with only more thuggery. That it hides behind men and women in the second photo, just reveals how morally bankrupt the regime really is.
