Yaraí Reyes Marín is asking the world to support and to demand the release of her husband, imprisoned Cuban journalist Normando Hernández González, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being arrested during the "black spring" of 2003. Hernández, according to his wife, is suffering from a variety of ailments that make his release a matter of life and death.
The Assembly for the Promotion of a Civil Society has a statement, dated Saturday, from Reyes:
"I want to call on all organizations that defend human rights; the international journalism profession; and the opposition, internally and in exile, to join a campaign to obtain the unconditional release of my husband, who at this moment is facing many difficult circumstances that are putting his life in danger."Normando is in the Kilo 7 prison in Camagüey, serving a 25-year prison sentence simply for working as an independent journalist. His health is in delicate condition. He suffers from intestinal malsorption syndrome — a product of giardia — which has caused him to lose a large amount of weight. He ought to have a diet based on beef, chicken, eggs, viandas and nothing of vegetables and milk products, except yogurt and boiled water to keep his stomach full most of the time, which is impossible in a Cuban jail."

Before the United States agrees to negotiate anything with the Castro brothers or whoever is in charge of their regime, we must remain steadfast that a pre-condtion of any talks is the release of Normando Hernández and the other more than 300 political prisoners.

Normando Hernández has been hospitalized, and may soon be transferred to a provincial hospital in Camagüey for further treatment, according to a story by journalist Tania Maceda Guerra posted at Payo Libre.
