Before we get too excited about the welcomed release of a few political prisoners, it would be useful to remember that the repression of other dissidents, in and out of the gulag, continues. The burden of proof — if not also burden of needing to just go away — lies with the dictators. The pressure on the regime to release all political prisoners must remain constant.
For example, on Friday afternoon, two former prisoners, Father Ricardo Santiago Medina Salabarría, an Orthodox Church priest, and Albert Santiago du Bouchet, were arrested and detained near the Colon cemetery in Havana, according to a story posted at Payo Libre.
State Security agents searched them, and confiscated several documents, including copies of stories from El Nuevo Herald and CubaNet. They were released later that evening.
"This was another example of State Security's repression of the peaceful opposition. In spite of it, our position for democratic change in Cuba remains strong."
