Cuban independent journalist Guillermo Fariñas is reporting that political prisoner Jorge Luís García Pérez (Antúnez) has been transferred from a prison in Camagüey to a facility in Villa Clara, and that he will soon be released.
While welcomed, Antúnez's release would not neccessarily represent a concession by the Castro dictatorship, just a recognition that the prisoner has completed his 17-year prison sentence. (He actually completed his sentence on March 15, but when did such technicalities matter to the dictatorship?)
Antúnez's sister, Berta Antúnez Pernet and her husband, Alejandro García Sardiñas, were able to visit with the prisoner for about 30 minutes on Tuesday. During the visit, a senior prison official told them that Antúnez would soon be released, according to Fariñas' story, which was posted this morning at Misceláneas de Cuba.
Antúnez is the current Uncommon Sense Political Prisoner of the Week.
