Albert Santiago du Bouchet Hernández
Independent journalist, and former political prisoner, Albert Santiago du Bouchet Hernández last week was convicted of stealing a hankerchief that once belonged to Fidel Castro and sentenced to 2 years in prison. After he is released, he will have to serve what I guess is 2 years of work-release (correccional - trabajo con internamiento) and 2 years of probation (control judicial), according to a story by independent journalist Álvaro Yero Felipe.
The story did not include details about the supposed "crime," but in an earlier story, Yero reported that du Bouchet had been accused of stealing the hankerchief from María Encarnación González Guerra, who in the 1950s was an activist in Castro's 26th of July Movement.
Du Bouchet, who was released from prison on Aug. 5, 2006, after serving 1 year and 7 days for "disrespecting" a local police chief, called the sentence unjust and said he was not prepared to return to prison.
"At this moment, I am in the appeal process, and have not been taken to prison, but with the communists, I expect anything," du Bouchet said.
