Perhaps taking a cue from the appeasers at the Spanish embassy, German diplomats last week did not invite Cuban dissidents, as they had in previous years, to attend their national day festivities at their embassy in Havana. As a result, several high-ranking Cuban government officials attended the party.
"I hope the human-rights activists in Cuba don't interpret that as an attempt to stabilize the regime," said German human rights commissioner Guenter Nooke.
No, of course not, Herr Nooke. It's just another example, as Green Party parliamentiarian Volker Beck noted, of Europe "kowtowing" to tyranny.
A position with which Germany is all too familiar, albeit from the position of the tyrant.
