The cruelties of the Cuban dictatorship have no bounds. For example, consider its treatment of political prisoner Jorge Luis González Tanquero.
Independent journalist Luis Esteban Espinosa, writing for Payo Libre, reports that guards at the Las Mangas prison have increased their harassment of González, and for three months running, have blocked him from communicating with his daugher, Meliza, who lives in Miami with her mother. Enilda Tanquero Roque, told Espinosa she worries that the rough treatment is worsening her son's delicate health.
Meliza and her mother, Marlenis, captured attention in October, when they visited Washington, D.C., to witness President Bush's speech about Cuba. The president mentioned them by name, putting two beautiful faces with which world can identify the sufferings of those in the gulag, and their families. And hopefully, reminding the dicatorship, that there are at least some — in the highest corridors of power — who are paying attention and who will one day hold it accountable for its crimes.
