The release from a Cuban prison of political prisoner Julio César Álvarez López should be imminent, according to a report by dissident Francisco Chaviano González, posted at Miscelaneas de Cuba. (In an accompanying note filed with his report, Chaviano informed Miscelaneas that although the release was approved last week, Álvarez was still in Combinado del Este prison as of this afternoon.)
Álvarez, who is 38 or 39, is a former counter-intelligence officer sentenced in 1992 to 19 years in prison for revealing to Cuban dissidents the names of State Security officers who had infiltrated opposition groups.
Before apologists for the Castro dictatorship get too excited about Álvarez's "early release," it is important to note, as Chaviano reminds, that under Cuban law Álvarez was entitled to parole since he had completed most of his sentence.
Hopefully, Chaviano's report would been proven true, and Álvarez is spending tonight with his family as a free man.
