Two political prisoners have started hunger strikes to protest the generally deplorable attitude held by guards at the Cuba Sí prison in Holguín, according to a report from independent journalist Juan Carlos Reyes Ocaña.
Diagzan Saavedra Prats started his hunger strike to protest being denied a place to sleep and not receiving his required medications. Saavedra lost his bunk after he refused to cooperate with a guard put in charge of changing sleeping arrangements for prisoners. When Saavedra complained to the guard's superior, the officer said he didn't care since he was able to sleep on a mattress, according to the report.
The other prisoner on hunger strike is Alexander Santos. He started his protest since prison officials have refused to take him to a hospital to be examined by specialists.
Santos was arrested in June 2006 and sentenced to 4 years for the supposed crime of "social dangerousness." I could not find any background about Saavedra.
