Political prisoner Hugo Damián Prieto Blanco has been on a hunger strike since Sept. 6, as a protest against prison officials' blocking him from communicating with his family via telephone and for denying him time outside as allowed by prison rules. Two days later, on Sept. 8, Prieto was tossed into a punishment cell at the Combindado del Este prison in Havana, according to a report from independent journalist Roberto de Jesús Guerra Pérez.
Prieto had been paroled earlier this year but because of his continued intransigence, i.e. his continued human rights work, he was returned to prison to serve out the remaining 7 months of his original 4-year sentence for being a "pre-criminal social danger." He should be released by November, but in Cuba who knows about such things?
