Rául "Little Brother" Castro made a minor splash last month when he suggested his dictatorship might be willing to release political prisoners if in exchange the United States would parole five Cuban intelligence agents convicted of espionage-related charges.
As if convicted spies are deserving of the same consideration as those jailed in Cuba simply because they want to live as free men and women.
Fortunately, the United States quickly and rightfully rejected the suggestion. And for that, political prisoner Ricardo González Alfonso, an independent journalist imprisoned since the "black spring" of 2003, is grateful.
"My unconditional liberation would be welcome, but don't exchange me for spies!" González said, according to a report posted at Plantados.org.
His fellow prisoners of conscience, Diosdado González Marrero and Nelson Molinet Espino, concur:
"Do not exchange us for common criminals and assassins in service of the cruelest dictatorship in the world."
