The release of a political prisoner from a Cuban jail is always worthy of celebration.
But don't get too excited. More often than not, a political prisoner wins release not because of a change of heart or an act of conciliation by the Castro regime, but because he has completed his sentence, as unjust as it was from the beginning.
Still, congratulations to Miguel Ángel López Herrera, who was released March 29 after serving 3 years at the Combinado de Guantánamo prison. He had been convicted in 2006 of "disrespecting" Fidel Castro, as if the decaying dictator was deserving of anything more. (A source I used for my political prisoner profile of López offered different dates for his imprisonment, but otherwise agreed on the bogus charge.)
