... from the president of the United States of America.
A busy schedule or confusion about the dates, is not enough of an excuse for President Barack Obama to not meet with representatives of five Cuban activists, including three political prisoners, honored by the National Endowment for Democracy on Wednesday.
Such a meeting, complete with photographs and video, would have sent a clear message on which side of the struggle for Cuban liberty the United States, and its president, stands. Maybe it would only have been a symbolic gesture, but in the battle of ideas, symbols matter.
And with so many doubting Obama's commitment to Cuban liberty, it should have been easier to fit a meeting into the president's schedule.
Instead, it's a missed opportunity.
UPDATED, 11:20 a.m. The White House did issue a statement recognizing the Democracy Award winners, but that wasn't enough for the Washington Post.
