I'm not sure what Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez will receive as a recipient of the Maria Moors Cabot Prize for outstanding reporting on Latin America and the Caribbean, but it is certain the rewards will include heightened credibility as one of the most eloquent, incisive critics of the Castro dictatorship and, hopefully, additional protection from that dictatorship.
This is a big deal for Sanchez. The Cabot Prize is one of the most prestigious in international journalism.
How big a deal depends on the dictatorship.
If it allows Sanchez to travel to the United States to accept the award, that would give her a wonderful platform for her wit and wisdom, elevating her profile to its highest level yet.
If it does not, as it has not for other prizes she has been awarded, that would only confirm her status as one of the regime's chief critics and reveal how very afraid it is of her.
