If the Cuban struggle for freedom has its Gandhi, its Mandela, its Martin Luther King Jr., a leader who by his example provides the moral leadership needed for that struggle to eventually prevail, it might be Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet.
At least the Castro dictatorship thinks he might be.
For all but 36 days of parole in 2002, Biscet has been imprisoned in the Castro gulag since 1999, and he is not set to be released for at least another 19 years. In the "black spring" of 2003, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison, because of his steadfast commitment to human rights and a free Cuba.
Monday, July 20, is Biscet's 48th birthday.
My wishes for him are twofold: That he find some comfort in knowing that he is not alone. Not only is God with him, but so are the wishes, the dreams, the love of his family and others waiting for the day that he, other political prisoners and all of Cuba, are free.
And that more of the world, thanks to the efforts of his supporters in Cuba and around the world, learn more about Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet, even if it's only by visiting this Web site or this blog, or by watching this video, and this one, too.
Please join me and others in wishing Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet a happy birthday, and more importantly demanding that the Castro dictatorship immediately release him and other political prisoners.
