A. Domínguez and J. Ferrer
Cuban political prisoners Alfredo Domínguez Batista and José Ferrer García have been locked in a battle of wills with their captors, since they were imprisoned during the "black spring" of 2003.
In the latest round, officials at the Las Tunas provincial prison ordered Domínguez and Ferrer to punishment cells, as retaliation for hunger strikes they started to protest the deplorable human rights conditions in the prison.
The punishment has added to their suffering. Domínguez's wife said the prisoners have contracted infections because of the poor conditions in the tiny punishment cells, and because they have been weakened by their hunger strikes.
"Right now, I can tell you that their situation is alarming," Melba Santana Ariz told Radio Martí.
Ferrer's sister, Ana Belkis Ferrer García, called on the Castro dictatorship to meet the prisoners' original demands.
"They don't give adequate food to the prisoners, they don't receive adequate medical treatment," Ana Ferrer said.
