Yoel Espinosa Medrano
The thugs in service of the Castro dictatorship will have to do a lot more than threaten to kill independent journalist Yoel Espinosa Medrano if they want to shut him up.
Independent journalist María de la Caridad Noa González reported this week that Espinosa was threatened by the local communist goon squad while traveling through the Mordazo neighborhood in Santo Domingo, in Villa Clara province.
"It is better that you not return to this town, we don't want you here, you are a counter-revolutionary," said Conrado Pérez, a local communist party militant. "If you return, we won't be responsible for your life. You are choosing between living and not returning."
Espinosa said he has been harassed on previous visits to the area, but this is the first time he has been threatened with death. However, the dictatorship and its thugs will have to do a lot more than that to stop him, Espinosa said.
"I am not going to be intimidated," he said. "Within a few days, I will visit my family again ... holding the Cuban government responsible for what could happen to me.
"I defend human rights peacefully."
Read one of Espinosa's more recent dispatches, here. He reports that several Cubans in Villa Clara have recently been fined for possessing satellite TV equipment.
