Yoel Lázaro Carbonell Guilar, president of the Free Cubans Movement, has been sentenced to 1 year in prison on supposed charges of "disobedience" and "disrespecting authority," after he allegedly refused a police demand he give them his identity papers, according to a report posted at Payo Libre.
The "trial" was a farce. Carbonell was given little advance notice of the proceedings, and no family or friends were allowed to be in the courtroom.
Carbonell was arrested Sept. 11 in Havana, and his trial was Sept. 15.
Independent journalist Tania Guerra Maceda wrote that Carbonell was punished because of his "intense activism in favor of human rights."
A report at CAPPF/CDHD 2506 includes several photographs of the home Carbonell shares with his family. Warning: They may break your heart.
