The Cuban health care "miracle" hasn't quite extended itself to the Castro gulag, where medical neglect is just another way for the dictatorship to persecute its prisoners.
Sometimes, prisoners have to take their care into their own hands, no matter how horrible the methods.
For example, at the Cerámica Roja prison in eastern Cuba, where even the presence of a dentist would be a real miracle, inmates have resorted to using wires to yank out ailing teeth. Others have applied mixture of iodine and battery acid to dissolve rotting teeth, according to a report from political prisoner Jorge Alberto Liriano Linares posted by CIHPRESS.
"Toothaches were driving me crazy, I could not stand it anymore," inmate Alexis Estrada Torres told Liriano. "I went with the wire extraction. I know that is risky, but it is the only solution in this valley of the shadow of death where I have lived."
