Ricardo González
Cuban prison officials are playing games with independent journalist Ricardo González' Alfonso's health — in the latest news, officials aren't letting him being examined by a glaucoma specialist — so he is fighting back the only way he can, limiting himself to a liquid diet to protest his treatment.
González, who started his protest on Nov. 15 (Day of the Imprisoned Writer) and plans to continue until Dec. 5 (International Human Rights Day), is making three specific demands:
- That the dictatorship treat González and other political prisoners recognized as such by Amnesty International, as "prisoners of conscience."
- That the dictatorship immediately release all prisoners of conscience.
- That the dictatorship provide all available benefits to all political prisoners not considered prisoners of conscience.
González is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence handed down during the "black spring" crackdown of March-April 2003.
