José Martí's 157th birthday on Jan. 28, was another opportunity for the Castro dictatorship to go after its opponents.
That's because it was another opportunity for anti-communist activists to gather, to honor the Apostle, and to remind each other that they are not alone in their struggle.
There have been numerous reports of how the Cuban police targeted for reprisal Cubans who chose to honor Martí on the anniversary of his birth.
For example, in the town of Placetas in Santa Clara province, police on Thursday arrested several dissidents after they left a floral tribute at a sculpture of Martí on on El Paseo. At least one of the activists was beaten by police.
A day earlier, police in Santiago de Las Vegas, had raided a home where about a dozen activists had gathered to plan an event commemorating Martí's birth.
Clearly, the dictatorship and its agents have no respect for the legacy of José Martí.
In fact, it appears that legacy, and how it inspires Cubans to this day, frightens them.
