Juan Carlos Herrera Acosta
Imprisoned Cuban journalist Juan Carlos Herrera Acosta has suffered almost indescribable torture since he was arrested during the "black spring" of 2003. His intransigence in the face of the horrors committed by his captors is inspiring.
One of his more admirable qualities is how he has remained true to his role as a journalist, by testifying to what he has witnessed in the Castro gulag. He has not complained about the abuses he has suffered, but instead has chosen to lend his voice to the tortures suffered by other inmates.
Most recently, Herrera described for Radio Martí how at the Holguín provincial prison, guards routinely beat "common" prisoners who request needed medicines and other treatment.
That is just one of the many appalling conditions at the prison.
"On Jan. 24, I ate a piece of bread that weighed just an ounce," Herrera said. "It had nothing more than a worm about three inches long, and it tasted like cockroaches."
