Luis Enrique Ferrer García
When he was arrested during the "black spring" crackdown almost seven years ago, Cuban democracy activist/independent journalist Luis Enrique Ferrer García entered the Castro gulag a young man of 26.
His spirit and commitment to the cause of Cuban liberty remain strong, but his body is broken.
Ferrer, who was sentenced to 28 years in prison, is suffering from various ailments brought on by and/or aggravated by his time in prison. The most serious may be an osteoarthritis that worsens every day, according to a Radio Martí report posted at Payo Libre. That his guards don't allow him the time in the sunlight recommended by doctors doesn't help.
"I am only 33 years old, and my bones fail me," Ferrer said. "It is a degenerative disease that over the years will worsen. "When I am 50, I imagine I will be in a wheelchair the way things are going."
