Oscar Elias Biscet
Cuban prisoner of conscience Oscar Elias Biscet, perhaps the best known captive in the Castro gulag, this week expressed his support for fellow prisoner Orlando Zapata Tamayo, who has been on hunger strike since Dec. 3 to protest the violation of his human rights.
Zapata, said Biscet, is deserving of all the support he can get for his protest.
"I am convinced that Orlando Zapata Tamayo is a human rights activist loyal to the cause, seeking freedom for all Cubans, and we should all support him so that the regime does not commit further abuses against him," Biscet told Radio Martí.
"This man has been very valuable for the Cuban people in the struggle for the just cause of freedom."
Activists and dissidents across the island have backed Zapata in his protest, which has left him near death in a Camagüey hospital, but Biscet's support may be the most significant yet because of his stature in the struggle against the dictatorship.
In offering his praise, Biscet help raise even higher, Zapata's own standing.
Hopefully, that will be enough to save his life.
Zapata is now in the 72nd day of his hunger strike.
