Egberto Escobedo
Fed up with the abuses and lies of the Castro dictatorship, Cuban political prisoner Egberto Escobedo has started a hunger strike, according to the Cuban Democratic Directorate.
Escobedo started his hunger strike on April 16 to protest abuses committed against him and other Cuban political prisoners, and to highlight the "farce" that will be on display during national "elections" on April 25 and planned pro-government demonstrations on May 1.
With his protest, said human rights activist Julio Romero Muñoz, Escobedo wants to show his "solidarity with those who don't march."
A member of the National Council for a Democratic Transition, Escobedo in July 1995 was convicted of "terrorism" and "enemy propaganda" and sentenced to 20 years in prison. He is currently being held in the La Empresita prison in Camagüey.

The Cuban Democratic Directorate also reported today that two other political prisoners, Nelson Vázquez Lima and Roberley Villalobos, are continuing with hunger strikes they started April 5. Vázquez is demanding that he moved out of an isolation cell, where he has been held since 2006, and Villalobos is demanding a court hearing and judicial due process for his case.
Also, three other political prisoners — Abel López Pérez, José Alberto Liriano Linares and Alfredo Noa Estupiñán — are continuing "fasts" they started to show their support for Guillermo Fariñas.
UPDATED, April 21, 2010 — Escobedo tells Radio Martí that his protest is better described as a "fast," that he plans to end May 1.
