Dr. Darsi Ferrer Ramírez
I received in my e-mail this morning a message from Cuban prisoner of conscience Dr. Darsi Ferrer Ramírez. A physician, human rights activist and journalist, Ferrer has been imprisoned since July 21, 2009, although he has never formally been charged with a crime. Other dissidents, and Amnesty International, say he is being persecuted because of his opposition activities.
In this letter, dated May 31, Ferrer writes mostly not of his own suffering, but about what his wife and child have had to endure at the hands of the Castro dictatorship.

I have been in prison for more than ten months due to my opposition activities, and I do not regret my current situation. On the contrary, from prison I have kept up the fight for a free Cuban nation and to put an end to the ignorance forced upon the people by the regime of the Castro brothers.
In prison I have endured beatings, confinement to punishment cells, deplorable conditions, discrimination, and the assaults and threats of the military personnel; aside from the consequences of three hunger strikes that have further broken my health.
None of this is as painful as knowing the misery and lack of resources that my wife, Yusnaimy Jorge Soca, endures. And now, with the added responsibility of caring for herself and our little eight year old son, as well as maintaining our home, and providing some minimum care for me while I am in prison.
There are enough TV, radio and print reports that show the courage and tenacity of Yusnaimy in her struggle for the freedom of the Cuban people. In many occasions she has suffered beatings, arrests, and her work and testimony help disseminate the truth about Cuba around the world.
Our little Daniel shows multiple psychological traumas as the results of the many acts of repudiation and other injustices exerted upon us by Security of State in his presence.
That my wife and child are forced to go to bed without eating for lack of elementary resources to their subsistence, is a reality I never thought I would have to add to the calamity of my confinement.

La Habana, Cuba. 31 de mayo de 2010.
Llevo más de 10 meses presos por mi labor opositora y no me arrepiento de mi situación, por el contrario, desde la cárcel he mantenido la lucha porque la nación cubana sea libre y termine la ignorancia a la que el régimen de los hermanos Castros somete a nuestro pueblo.
En la prisión he soportado golpizas, celda de castigo, condiciones deplorables, trato discriminatorio, y las vejaciones y amenazas de los militares. Además de las consecuencias de tres huelgas de hambre, que han quebrantado aún más mi salud.
Nada de lo anterior es tan doloroso como saber las condiciones de miseria y falta de recursos que soporta mi esposa, Yusnaimy Jorge Soca, ahora con la responsabilidad de la manutención de ella y de nuestro pequeño niño de 8 años de edad, además de los cuidados de nuestra casa y de las atenciones mínimas que requiero en la prisión.
Hay suficientes reportajes televisivos, radiales y escritos que demuestran la valentía y el tesón de Yusnaimy en la lucha que sostiene por la libertad del pueblo cubano. En varias ocasiones ha sufrido golpizas, detenciones, y su labor y testimonios contribuyen a que la verdad de la Cuba sufrida se conozca a nivel mundial.
Nuestro pequeño Dariel tiene grandes traumas psicológicos como resultado de los actos de repudio y demás injusticias que hemos sufrido a mano de la seguridad del estado en su presencia.
El que mi mujer y mi niño tengan que acostarse sin comer por no tener siquiera recursos elementales para la subsistencia, es una realidad que no pensé tendría que sumarle a las calamidades de mi encierro.
