Cuban human rights activist Dr. Darsi Ferrer was arrested last July, and has been imprisoned since then with no charges ever being filed. However, we learned this week that the communist authorities have finally set a trial date, June 22, on trumped up charges related to his purchase of some cement to make repairs to his home after it was damaged by police. Prosecutors are asking that Ferrer be sentenced to 3 years in prison.
I will write more as the trial date approaches, but know this: The charges have nothing to do with him allegedly buying cement on the black market, and everything to do with his human rights work, his work as a doctor and his work as an independent journalist. He is a spokesman for the CAMBIO, for the "change," Cuba so desperately needs, and that scares the hell out of the Castro dictatorship.
Please join those of us who admire and respect Dr. Ferrer in supporting him through this difficult time. Pay attention to what happens next Tuesday in Havana, and demand his unconditional release from the Castro gulag. Do your part to shine light on this case, to hold the dictatorship accountable for what it is doing to this incredible man. It really can make a difference.
Stand up for this patriot and freedom fighter so that Ferrer and his family — and his captors — know that he will never be alone.
