Ernesto Mederos Arrozarena
Cuban opposition activist Ernesto Mederos Arrozarena last week was tried, convicted, sentenced to 1 year in prison and after almost a year in prison waiting for a trial, released, according to a report posted at Payo Libre.
The report, from human rights activist/independent journalist Juan Carlos González Leiva, did not describe the specific charge the Castro dictatorship relied upon to justify its prosecution.
But when he was arrested in August 2009, while traveling from Santa Clara to Havana to participate in activities to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the maleconazo uprising, police attacked and beat Medereros and tore his clothes — leading to charges that Medereos had attacked and beaten police officers.
That's typical for the Cuban "justice" system, especially in how it is used against the Castro regime's opponents.
And so is how Mederos' "trial" was conducted. Mederos, who is recovering from the effects of a month-long hunger strike he started to demand his release, told González that other activists were not allowed to attend the hearing.
