Once they are released, they will be forced into exile in Spain. However, Suárez and his family were expected eventually to settle in Canada.
Forced exile is better than a moment in the Castro gulag, but forced exile when it is the product of the maneuverings of others — in this case, the Spanish government, the Catholic Church and the Cuban dictatorship — is never acceptable. The prisoners and nobody else in the Cuban opposition was party to the arrangement, but they are the ones suffering the consequence.
Still, freedom is sweet, and as former prisoner Arturo Pérez de Alejo, who was expected to arrive in Miami today from Madrid, notes in the Diario de Cuba story, these Cuban heroes are now free to resume the struggle for Cuban liberty.
