A total of 52 Cuban political prisoners are covered by the deal between Spain, the Catholic Church and the Castro dictatorship for their release from jail, expulsion from the island and forced exile.
Of the 36 who have been released, 34 remain in Spain, one has move to Chile and one arrived in the United States earlier this week. And three others reportedly will soon be released.
Of the remaining, 12 have made it clear to Cardinal Jaime Ortega and presumably to their jailers that they would rather stay in prison than accept a deal that requires them to leave Cuba or adhere to any type of parole that keeps them under the control of the Castro dictatorship.
The news is not so definite about the last prisoner covered by the release arrangement, Luis Enrique Ferrer.
Europa Press reported today at Ferrer's is an "ambiguous situation," as he reportedly is seeking some assurances before he decides whether to agree to take exile in Spain. (Incidentally, his brother José is one of The Twelve who have rejected the deal.)
