Giving into pleas from family members that he save his own life, Cuban activist Vladmir Alejo this week ended a hunger strike after 75 days of protest. For the final 29 days, Alejo demonstrated his resolve by sewing his mouth shut.
Alejo, a former political prisoner, started his hunger strike in early July to demand that the government that it return to him some of his belongings it had seized. Later, he said he also was protesting the poor state of human rights in Cuba.
Critically ill, Alejo on Wednesday agreed to end his protest after family members expressed concerns about his health. But he is not giving up the fight against the Castro dictatorship.
"Vladimir said he will continue his fight on the streets and that when he recover, he will take to the streets with activists of the Popular Movement for Human Rights," said Cuban independent journalist Eriberto Liranza Romero.
