There remain in Cuban prisons 11 courageous men of principle, unjustly jailed since 2003 but unwiling to give up those principles in exchange for their release from the Castro gulag, one of the world's awful hellholes.
The 11 were supposed to be released by now, as they were among the 52 prisoners covered by a July 7 agreement between Spain, the Catholic Church and the Castro dictatorship for their release. Forty of the other 41 agreed to leave Cuba and have taken exile in Spain, Chile, the United States — and no one should begrudge them for their respective decisions.
Only one, Arnaldo Ramos, has been released and allowed to stay in Cuba.
However, those in the Group of 11 will not accept any pre-conditions for their release, demonstrating to the frustration of their captors and those trying to aid the Castros — Spain and the church — that they are already free.
