Cuban political prisoner Agustín Cervantes has been on hunger strike for 10 days, to protest his jailers' constant abuse of his basic human rights.
In response, other Cuban activisits — including former political prisoners in exile in Spain and Oswaldo Payá, head of the Christian Liberation Movement, of which Cervantes is a member — are calling on Cubans and others around the world to raise their voices on Cervantes' behalf.
They note that last December, Orlando Zapata Tamayo started a hunger strike and not until after it was too late — on Feb. 23 when he died — did many even know his name.
Payá and the others are pleading with the world so that Cervantes does not meet an identical fate.
UPDATED, 5:25 p.m. EST — Cuban Democratic Directorate has more details about Cervantes' demands, which include the release of 11 prisoners of conscience covered by a deal between Spain, the Catholic Church and the Castro dictatorship for their release — but who remain imprisoned because they refuse forced exile as a condition of their freedom.
